What a NICE surprise in the November issue of The RAKE. I think the writing in this monthly Twin Cities free press makes it one of the best. I picked up the current issue because my favorite movie is Ordinary People by author Judith Guest, and she is on the cover. Her new book is the reading for the Raking through Books, and she will be at their next book club meeting. Well, to my surprise....in the section called Broken Clock....I found a nice clipping about the Wilde Roast Cafe! Pick it up or read it online. THANKS RAKE! http://www.rakemag.com/clock/detail.asp?catID=42&itemID=20151

Dean and I finally got out of town for MEA weekend, and of course it was the busiest weekend at the Wilde Roast Cafe yet. So, we would REALLY like to thank our wonderful staff for doing their best and holding up to the challenge. A special thanks to Jason and Kemmie! Be sure to look for us in your NWA In-Flight magazine when flying in November. We will also be mentioned in the coffee magazine Fresh Cup this November.

What a weekend. Friday night was packed for the John Trones CD release party. I would guess about 200 people came to the event. If you want a copy of the CD ROMANCE you can pick it up at Query Booksellers. I will be posting a picture from the night of John, Jim Brickman (who plays the piano on the CD), Dean and myself. Saturday night's crowd of 50 came to share in the conversation on "Living with Fear," and celebrated Oscar's 150th Birthday! This was our first SALON NIGHT. The November and December Salon Nights will be topics from Utne Reader's Let's Talk America (http://letstalkamerica.org/). The dates and topics will be posted soon. They will be less formal. In January we will again be working with the Loft for the topic "Family Matters." This will be on Tuesday the 18th of January.

SUMMARY: A collection of 104 manuscripts, letters and other items owned by witty playwright Oscar Wilde will auctioned later this month in London. For those who know the importance of being wealthy, an auction of manuscripts, letters and other items owned by playwright Oscar Wilde will be held later this month. The collection of 104 items went on exhibit Thursday at Sotheby's in New York. The auction will take place in London on Oct. 29, with proceeds expected to exceed $1 million, the Associated Press (AP) reported. A photograph of Wilde inscribed by his friend Robert Ross and a first edition of his play "A Woman of No Importance" signed to his mother are among the items to be auctioned. A hand-written manuscript chapter 16 of his novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is also in the collection, and officials estimate it will be sold for $145,000. "There is a huge market for Oscar Wilde in New York City, from private clients to public institutions," Sotheby's books and manuscripts expert Philip Errington told the AP. This month is the 150th anniversary of the Irish writer's birth. Wilde, who once said, "One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art," became famous for his wit and his flamboyant personal style. He was prosecuted and jailed for homosexuality -- or "the love that dare not speak its name," as he said during his trial -- and has since become a gay icon. Wilde's acclaimed plays include "The Importance of Being Earnest," "An Ideal Husband" and "Lady Windermere's Fan." He died in exile in Paris in 1900.

On Monday, October 11th (3 to 6pm) Saint Paul Schools' Out For Equity program is hosting a "National Coming Out Day Celebration" at the cafe. They will have refreshments, live music, special guests, and prizes. For many in the GLBT community their coming out story is one of the defining moments in their life. This day is a to celebrate our commonalities, come share your story.

If you have not seen Dean around the cafe lately it is because he was planning my 40th Surprise Birthday Party. He was finishing up projects around the house and organizing the event. As luck would have it the weather was 10 degrees higher than normal, so our backyard worked for the guests. He is so GREAT!

One of the really nice perks of owning a business is making connections with people. Dean and I met Shayna Berkowitz and her partner last summer at Spider Lake Lodge (see links). Shayna told us about this exciting film she was producing called "WELLSTONE! The Documentary Film." She mentioned that they were doing a pre-premire showing in October and asked us if we would be interested in providing some refreshments for the showing. Of course we jumped on the chance to see this film. Well, the pre-premire was last night at St. Paul Academy. Family and friends were invited to see the film and have an after film chat, it was very moving and timely. If you would like to see this film it will have it's WORLD PREMIRE on October 14th at The Heights Theatre (see links). Remember the word KARMA? A Hinduism & Buddhism word meaning: the total effect of a person's actions and conduct during the successive phases of the person's existence, regarded as determining the person's destiny. Well, I found out that the big box order was an effect of karma. The Wilde Roast Cafe is a sponsor of the AIDS Trek. I was at the kick-off event for the Trek this year and met this neat lady with a great story. She adopted 3 boys from Africa who came to the US for a basketball exhibition. She is a pharmacists representative. She and I chatted at the event for a while, and it was her who put in the big order for the box lunches. By the way it went off very well...thanks!
