Thanks Again Rick

Posted June 29th, 2008 at 7:24 pm by Tom

Did you see in the Star Tribune last Friday?  Rick Nelson wrote about the brownies at the Wilde Roast Cafe in his HOT SPOT for SWEETS.  Thanks Rick!

Owners Tom DeGree and Dean Schlaak should consider changing the name of their cozy cafe/coffeehouse to Brownie Central, because the kitchen’s moist, plus-size squares of chocolately goodness are probably the most decadent goodie in the Twin Cities to come out of a 9- by 13-inch pan, and certainly a fine way for any sugar hound to drop $2.95.

July/August Artists

Posted June 23rd, 2008 at 10:05 pm by Tom

andre1.jpg

Our dining room wall will display the art of Andre Salvadore during the months of July and August.

I cannot remember a time in my life that I was not drawing or painting. As a child in Italy my parents were encouraged to foster my love and ability in art by most of my teachers, when we came to America My Mother paid from the meager earnings she made, for me to be tutored privately from various artists, I met the Artist John Grengs as a young teen who became both teacher and mentor for many years to come, he was an expressionist painter who painted people in scenes in a modern context. he was a big influence in my brush work .I studied with a number of local and national artist in the following years, in the 1980s I started painting colorful almost abstract figures and I had my first one man show in 1984 at Gallery M on Grand Ave. in St. Paul when Marta Bittner the owner, who wanted to show emerging artist in the Twin Cities.
In the 1990s my work was becoming more representational. I began to draw on my love of early 20th Century poster and carnival art from Italy and France, and in the last 2 years I began to draw on the style form Mid. Century American cinema because it was through these movies that I tried to understand this country, also I realized that so few artist in that time were painting the people of there time because Abstract expressionism was king, so the Idea of seeing this stylish age on canvas rather than film and photography was both intriguing and limitless in scope.

I have been an active participant in the last 10 years in the St. Paul Art Crawl, the Arts in the Midway Shows, and the last 3 years as a member of the Northrup King Artists Collaborative, and have been showing with this group during Art A Whirl and Art Attack, and have done count less installations of my work in both Public and private spaces, you can go to www.salvadoreart.com and view my archive and some new work. Please Join us at the Opening of my installation at the Wilde Roast Café. Sunday July 13th 6-8 pm

Alex will be displaying his photography in the hallway during July and August. His opening will be July 3rd from 6 to 8pm.

What Can I say, along with my beautiful wife and son, photography is my life, and my drive. There is nothing like creating art with the simple click of a button. But there is more to it than just pushing the button, the intricate process involved in composition, colors, lighting, what type of lens, what angle… High or low, all in the matter of a few seconds is what makes it more challenging than just pushing a button. That is why I am in school to continue my knowledge and continue to fine-tune my craft. Knowledge is power, so the more I know the better off I am, which will set me further apart from the competition and give me that edge to succeed. As my gallery continues to grow, you will see the continuing growth of me as a person as well as my style, which it is my hope to have it ever changing so that it always stays fresh, and true to who I am. Thanks again for taking the time to view my galleries, and I hope you all continue to check back as much as possible.

St. Croix Garden Tour

Posted June 14th, 2008 at 10:35 pm by Tom

home08.jpg

Our garden will be on the St. Croix Garden Tour…a benefit for Family Means. July 12th and 13th….hope to see you on the tour. Tickets are only $12, all money will go to Family Means.

Artistically arranged plantings create a palette of chartreuse and burgundy that accent the charming 1915 arts and crafts home. The fencing, garden gate and deck not only set off the gardens but also creatively disguise a dog run. The front garden was created just two years ago after a driveway was torn out and the side gardens have been restored; with super-sized bird bath. The yard is accented by graceful, 150 year old bur oaks and white pine. Make sure you see the Dwarf Ginkgo “Jade Butterflies”, Golden Spirit Smokebush, Vanderwolf Dwarf Limber Pines, and the Tiger Sumac. “Gardening is all about building community, many neighbors stop to talk with me when I am working in the garden.” Tom

July 19th Update

Posted June 11th, 2008 at 8:12 am by Tom

kim2.jpg

As you may know on July 19th we are hosting a fundraiser for Camp Heartland in the parking lot of the cafe. Kimberley Locke is singing…but now we found out she will be joined by ANT * and Abigale. This is not only for a great cause…but it is an awesome line-up.

Ant_LIV_6974.jpg

* ANT: Hyper, irreverent, and downright fabulous, ANT has steadily climbed the comedy hill to become one of the most successful comedians of our time. A regular guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Tyra Banks show, ANT is the only comedian to appear on all five seasons of NBC’s hit series Last Comic Standing. Currently he can be seen as the host of VH1’s juggernaut smash Celebrity Fit Club, now in it’s 6th season, and in the LOGO series, “U.S. of ANT.” In the summer of 2008, ANT ventured out of his comfort zone, appearing in the VH1 series, “Celebri-Cadabra.” a competition show featuring magic and celebrities. His hit stand-up DVD, “ANT: America’s Ready” and comedy CD “Follow my ass!” have sold tens of thousands of copies and are available in stores nationwide and online at every CD/DVD retailer including amazon.com. Newly slim and trim after an impressive 34lb weight loss on the NutriSystem diet program, the company named ANT spokesman joining Tori Spelling and Jillian Barberi in a $20 million dollar ad campaign for 2008-2009. ANT’s daily video blog, “The ANT Colony,” has taken the web by storm.

Danielle and Michael Dahl

June 7th, 2008

This past weekend my oldest niece Dani got married at the Mill City Museum. Mike owns Evolution Hair in the Lyn-Lake area. I might be biased, but my niece could easily be a model for wedding dresses…and look at that hair!
