Sept/Oct Artist Opening

Michael Quernemoen
OPENING Sept. 12
7pm - 10pm

Multimedia Graphics Designer by day and manic artist by night, Michael Quernemoen (or just ‘Q’ as some call him) has been producing creative expressions since childhood having won his first state wide art contest at the age of ten. Mike calls the twin cities home but says he left his heart back in Boston Massachusetts where he lived and worked for several years as a designer and artist. Having moved back to the midwest, Mike has been producing and selling various works of art when time allows.

Mike draws his inspiration from bold, dynamic visuals that he likes to believe become a “WOW” centerpiece in someone’s home. Having mostly used acrylics over the years, he now uses oils and metallic paints with thick textures and brilliant glazes to bring the creations to life. Mike loves to experiment with various mediums and paint applications to achieve a bold visual.

Having sold works to individuals all over the country, Mike says “It’s highly impressive to walk into someone’s home and see they have an original work of art on their wall. It speaks volumes about a person’s sense of esthetics and sophistication. Owning an original work of art is also an investment that appreciates in value over time.”

Mike donates a portion of the sale of the artwork to charity saying that giving back to the community is of great importance through the gift of beauty.

March/April Artist

Posted February 18th, 2009 at 9:07 pm by Tom

jd.jpg

March 14th is the Opening Reception for: Jim Dryden and Adam Dykes

Adam is a Minnesota native.  Though he has lived a large part in Colorado and some in Germany, Minneapolis has always been a home base.  A Jack-of-all-trades, he has lived his life in commitment to many different endeavors.  Music, theatre, healthcare and photography, just to name a few.  He has two music degrees and has education and experience in several other fields.  He is very hands on, and likes to learn things as he goes.

Jim lives in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area. Jim studied art and music at the University of Minnesota, and has a BFA in painting and printmaking from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. A love for travel and exotic places has been a primary influence in Jim’s work. He draws inspiration from many diverse cultural and ethnic traditions, and paints with a color palette that speaks of latitudes far south of Minnesota.

A partial list of Jim’s corporate clients includes: 3M, Anheuser Busch, Coca-Cola, Disney, Honda, General Mills, GMAC, GTE, John Deere, Marriot, NWA, Payne-Weber, Target, and Viacom. Concurrently, he provides artwork to a wide variety of fine arts organizations and non-profit causes: The American Red Cross, Chicago Jazz & Blues Festival, Children’s Crisis Nursery, the Guthrie Theater, Minnesota Arts Council, MacPhail Center for the Arts, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Jim’s work has also been published in numerous trade journals and educational texts, and has been awarded recognition by the American Society of Illustrators.

January/February Artists

Posted January 4th, 2009 at 4:47 pm by Tom
Our New artists of the year are Chelsae Biggs (Acrylic Painter) and Tom Reynen (photographer). Tom’s work is also available at 1023 Washington Ave So.  The website is www.milldistrictartsgallery.com

CHELSAE: Ever since I can remember I have been an artist. As a child, I would collect things from all around he house and make little creations with what I’d found. Now I do the same thing in the world. I grew up in the Twin Cities and graduated from the U of M with a degree in studio art. Over the past few years I have been making and displaying art. Right now I’m adventuring and residing in Rhode Island. Art plays an immense role in our world. When I create, I feel alive.

In this series of paintings I was inspired by the moments in ordinary life that are extraordinary because of realizations inside us. I also experimented with blurring the line between reality and the dream world. Now is a time of change and hope; a time for society to reignite imagination and encourage progressive thinking. In this time I have found myself perpetually searching for something and I am excited to share with you what I’ve found.

Carolyn Manney

Posted September 23rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm by Tom

Our October-December Photographer is Carolyn Manney. Come to the cafe to meet her on Oct. 3rd around 7pm.

connection.JPG

I am a photographer living in northeast Minneapolis. I moved here a few years ago after living in Boulder, Colorado for a while after college. It wasn’t until I moved to the Twin Cities that I got back into photography after not having done too much with it since high school. I find myself drawn to the beauty of the mundane. The everyday things we walk by and might not look twice at; buildings, warehouses, train tracks, etc. The common thread that runs through each of my photographs is an interest in capturing dynamic composition such as the lines and angles found in these urban landscapes. July/August Artists

Posted June 23rd, 2008 at 10:05 pm by Tom

andre1.jpg

Our dining room wall will display the art of Andre Salvadore during the months of July and August.

I cannot remember a time in my life that I was not drawing or painting. As a child in Italy my parents were encouraged to foster my love and ability in art by most of my teachers, when we came to America My Mother paid from the meager earnings she made, for me to be tutored privately from various artists, I met the Artist John Grengs as a young teen who became both teacher and mentor for many years to come, he was an expressionist painter who painted people in scenes in a modern context. he was a big influence in my brush work .I studied with a number of local and national artist in the following years, in the 1980s I started painting colorful almost abstract figures and I had my first one man show in 1984 at Gallery M on Grand Ave. in St. Paul when Marta Bittner the owner, who wanted to show emerging artist in the Twin Cities.
In the 1990s my work was becoming more representational. I began to draw on my love of early 20th Century poster and carnival art from Italy and France, and in the last 2 years I began to draw on the style form Mid. Century American cinema because it was through these movies that I tried to understand this country, also I realized that so few artist in that time were painting the people of there time because Abstract expressionism was king, so the Idea of seeing this stylish age on canvas rather than film and photography was both intriguing and limitless in scope.

I have been an active participant in the last 10 years in the St. Paul Art Crawl, the Arts in the Midway Shows, and the last 3 years as a member of the Northrup King Artists Collaborative, and have been showing with this group during Art A Whirl and Art Attack, and have done count less installations of my work in both Public and private spaces, you can go to www.salvadoreart.com and view my archive and some new work. Please Join us at the Opening of my installation at the Wilde Roast Café. Sunday July 13th 6-8 pm

Alex will be displaying his photography in the hallway during July and August. His opening will be July 3rd from 6 to 8pm.

What Can I say, along with my beautiful wife and son, photography is my life, and my drive. There is nothing like creating art with the simple click of a button. But there is more to it than just pushing the button, the intricate process involved in composition, colors, lighting, what type of lens, what angle… High or low, all in the matter of a few seconds is what makes it more challenging than just pushing a button. That is why I am in school to continue my knowledge and continue to fine-tune my craft. Knowledge is power, so the more I know the better off I am, which will set me further apart from the competition and give me that edge to succeed. As my gallery continues to grow, you will see the continuing growth of me as a person as well as my style, which it is my hope to have it ever changing so that it always stays fresh, and true to who I am. Thanks again for taking the time to view my galleries, and I hope you all continue to check back as much as possible.
