When Minnesota born artist Michael Quernemoen thinks back, he can remember winning his first art contest in second grade. Following would be many years of winning various art contests and awards. Labeled the “artist” in the family, Mike was even given the nickname, “Michael Angelo,” by his grandfather. After high school, Mike pursued a career in graphic design which evolved into a love for multimedia design. Painting and drawing would take a side seat and become more of a hobby for Mike but truly a continued passion.
Completely self taught, Mike finds the time to create new works when the mood inspires him. Mike says, “At times there is this force, this energy that takes over, creating an experience of no thought and no mind, just pure visual, emotional evolution. There is an amazing exchange of energy in this process. Time is meaningless and the current moment is all that exists with this flow.”
Mike’s mediums tend mostly to acrylics, but he occasionally delves into everything from watercolors to oils and other mixed medias. Currently, Mike uses more iridescent and metallic colors along with thick, heavy paint and brilliant glazes to bring the flat canvases to life. Mike’s subjects span from deep abstracts, portraits, fantasies, or reinterpretations of famous works of art into completely different visuals. Many of Mike’s pieces are vivid and bold and allow you to interpret each piece in different and complex ways. Some works are more literal.
Mike is elated to unveil his first dedicated show of gallery works for the Wilde Roast Cafe. His biggest thrill is when he knows someone will give one of his creations a good home to be enjoyed for years to come. In his words, “There is a sort of electricity that happens with the exchange of a piece to a new owner. It’s wonderful and exhilarating for both of us. And at the same time, it humbles and honors me.”
Mike is proud to donate a percentage of his proceeds from this gallery show to One Heartland. One Heartland is a national non-profit organization with local Twin Cities roots committed to greatly improving the lives of children, youth and their families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Giving back to those in need is important to Mike and he states, “Giving back to our community is crucial. I definitely give what I can. I hope others feel as passionate as I do - be it about my art or helping others through various charities. We are in this life together.”

Aloha, I would like to add a plea for readers to consider helping people living in the U.S. affiliated Pacific region–American Samoa, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam–which suffers enormous health disparities due in part to limited Federal assistance, and in part due to the post-colonial era annual per capita income: for example, it is only $2,900 in the Marshall Islands, and $2,300 in the Federated States of Micronesia. For comparison, the U.S. annual per capita income is $46,000. Even a small donation to the GUAHAN Project (http://www.guahanproject.org/index.php)–the regional AIDS service organization–can make a huge difference for women in these small, culturally rich enclaves that could be destroyed by HIV/AIDS.
