The Smooch

Posted July 29th, 2007 at 10:17 am by Tom

MISSION STATEMENT: To serve as a photographic testament that all humans, regardless of social, economic, or political barriers, share a joyful willingness to welcome love and affection into their lives.

St. Paul Photographer Bonnie Fournier is working on THE SMOOCH PROJECT. She is taking pictures of people sharing love and affection. Bonnie was at the Lavender Magazine event at TC PRIDE where she captured Dean’s smooch.

This SMOOCH reminds me of the last time I was smooched…Kindergarten. This was in the local White Bear Newspaper in 1969. Yes, it says “Kindergartener Wows Gals- Real Ladies Man”…if they would have only known, that poor Liz and Tammi. The article (yes, there was an article) that ran with the story was about how 7 of the 10 gals in my class picked me “the most likely to succeed.” Even my teacher Mrs. Fredericks had to admit “He’s sure cute.”

Updates on a few things…

Posted July 26th, 2007 at 7:39 am by Tom
  • Kevin is doing a gig in Japan this week…so, no Noir Nights this Friday.
  • I found out that Steven will NOT be opening the yarn store next to us. I guess somebody is only a month away from opening a yarn store down the block, so he didn’t want to compete. But, if you want to meet Steven he will be doing classes at the cafe…like THIS Sunday from 1-4pm. Come and meet him and try to talk him into changing his mind.
  • The meeting room has officially been named THE PARLOR. It is still only in working stages, but the power circle of GLBT Non-profit Leaders met in THE PARLOR yesterday and loved it. Keep and eye out for the Grand Opening.
  • I forgot to mention that The Parlor will be opened as overflow when the cafe is busy on the weekends…it will be German style dining….one long shared table.
  • Don’t forget…Noir Nights is just for the summer…Kevin moves back to NYC in September.

What is going into the Query space?

Posted July 19th, 2007 at 7:36 am by Tom

“What is going into the Query space” is a question we are asked about 20 times every day.  Well, I can finally tell you.  The back part of the space will be a WRC meeting room for groups of 10-15 people.  It will be available for private meetings at the cafe.  Hopefully it will be ready by August.

The front part of the space looks to be a knitting store owned by Knitting Guru Steven Berg who owns the Yarn Garage in Rosemount.  Sometimes called The Glitter Knitter because he knits for the stars in Hollywood.  You can check out his story and learn more about Steven.

The Minneapolis Movie Bears Guys want to have a big showing for HAIRSPRAY for next Tuesday (7/24). They are going to the Regal in Eagan. The movie is going to be at 7:35 and tickets will be $7.50. It’s Tuesday night so it’s free popcorn with a regal card, “which is free and can be picked up at the theater.”

Remember you don’t have to be a BEAR to join.

Side Note: We ran into John Waters several times on his bike in P-Town (where he lives) last week.

What is a Noir Night?

Posted July 15th, 2007 at 10:46 am by Tom

“What is happening at the cafe on Friday nights?” many people are asking.

Well, it really is just some cool music spun by Kevin Aviance (summering in the Twin Cities from NYC). A nice relaxing meal, cool music, drink specials…ALL before heading out for the night.

What it is NOT:

  • a Drag Show- Kevin is Haute Couture
  • a CLUB- the music is cool, jazz for you to relax

P-Town 2007

Posted July 15th, 2007 at 9:25 am by Tom

This past week Dean and I were in Provincetown with our friend Barry (AKA Mr. Lavender, who was sick the whole week*). If you don’t know what P-Town is you should check out their weekly publication PROVINCETOWN MAGZINE, it will give you an idea how gay it is there in P-Town.

It is located on the far tip of Cap Cod and the place where the Pilgrims first landed, before they went down to Plymouth Rock. The town has just 3,500 people in the winter and 50,000 in the summer. We took a day trip down the cape to Hyannis, of Kennedy fame and saw the museum and drove by the Kennedy beach home.

We caught Varla’s new show one night, but the BIG draw on the cape this summer is our own Miss Richfield! She can pack the house. It is only her 5th summer on the cape, you need to see her work the straight crowd. Yes. this picture was taken Friday night….she is doing her Christmas in July Show.

* NOTE:  I tried to get a picture of Barry without his hat, but he said he would kill me.  So, this is what it looked like:
