Here is a letter I had published in the Stillwater Gazette. Let me know what you think about it.
SIGN OF THE TIMES
I know the title is sort of cliché, but it fits. The fall is election time. A time when people put out their yard sign showing you who they are voting for and hope you will vote along with them. It is our right to show our political sign and I am for that no matter who you support.
Several months ago my partner and I moved from Minneapolis to Lake Elmo. We wanted more land and to be closer to my family, growing up in White Bear Lake most of my seven siblings live on this side of town.
Friends thought we were crazy. But, looking at the large number of yard signs in Lake Elmo supporting Julie Bunn, and Kathy Saltzman we thought we found several progressive people who voted like us.
Here is our problem: We want to support local businesses but today I saw two huge signs for Michelle Bachmann in front of Gorman’s Restaurant. Michelle Bachmann and her wedge issue of the “Marriage Amendment?” The Michelle Bachmann who has taken over $50,000 in campaign contributions from groups who have the only goal of doing away with public education?
Why would a business put up yard signs? Should we vote for her because the owner of Gorman’s thinks we should? Is he a celebrity like Garrison Keillor or the Dixie Chicks?
Smart business owner shouldn’t show their political party. Why would a business want to lose customers of the opposite party? I guess they think that everyone who lives in the area agrees with them, or should agree with them. Look at the signs, because it doesn’t make cents.
